GCSE Best Practice AQA – Manchester

Presenters: Simon Gray and (Food Teachers Centre Senior Associate) and Adanna Uzoigwe, Trinity High School

 Each workshop focuses on a particular exam course. There are two parts to the day. In the morning, you will work alongside an experienced teacher practitioner who guides you through how they have successfully planned and taught the course, how they have addressed issues and gained good performance from their students. The afternoon is a hands-on practical skills session to develop your knowledge understanding and personal skills.

          What Year 9 looks like to prepare for the exam course

          How to approach options evenings, options choices and selling the course

          Getting started in Y10 – inspiration to motivate students at the start of the course and setting boundaries and expectations, getting parents and the rest of the school on board

          Developing knowledge and practical skills side by side throughout Y10 – ideas for lessons that work

          Setting homework, assessments and mocks.

          Approaching Year 11 scheme of work – what it looks like

          Getting help with scheduling and organizing NEA– issues and solutions

          Giving generic feedback and supporting all abilities

          Revision for the examination and strategies for approaching the paper.

Demonstration and skills practical: Achieving higher mark bands in GCSE practical assessments whilst supporting all learners

          Learn recipes, skills and techniques that are considered higher level practical skills

          Learn how to teach styling and presentation skills so that your students gain better marks

          Develop effective teaching strategies and techniques for practical lessons, understand common mistakes and shortcuts to deliver quality dishes

          Understand practical mark schemes and how to incorporate expected skill levels

          Select and use commodities to achieve higher mark bands

          Conducting practical assessments

All teachers will be given access to a Digital delegate folder that will contain the presentations, example recipes, checklists and handouts that you can use with your classes


PRESENTERS

 

Simon Gray is an experienced teacher, head of department and Licence to Cook Lead practitioner. He’s worked outside teaching in Hospitality and Retail Catering Management.  He’s also a Moderator and examiner and H&S consultant. He was part of the project team for School Food Champions programme and is able to offer advice and guidance on a wide range of food related activities, particularly in setting up and equipping food rooms, developing systems and procedures to operate food rooms in a safe and hygienic manner. He offers food safety training,  support on curriculum development, tracking and monitoring student performance, new teaching resources and writing schemes of work for KS3 and KS4. More

All of these events are ticket only and payable IN ADVANCE. The Food Teachers Centre uses Eventbrite (as many organisations do) to automate the bookings via credit card.   When you book you will receive by email a full VAT invoice/receipt.

 

PLEASE NOTE your booking confirmation and ticket will be emailed to both the delegate and person purchasing. If you do not receive your ticket it is most commonly caused by typing your email address incorrectly, or it is in your SPAM folder. Please check your booking carefully. It is VERY important that your school finance manager supplies your full name and PERSONAL- SCHOOL email so that we are able to send you joining instructions and further details. If we only receive the ‘school office’ email address, we have found in the past that this delays information getting to you or information is not passed on.

When you sign up with Eventbrite

  • Eventbrite takes your booking via credit card, these details are not passed to the Food Teachers Centre
  • The ticket buyer email/school address are passed to Food Teachers Centre so that we can send you a ticket and invoice for the training you have booked.
  • This information is kept under password protection in our financial records for 6 years (HMRC requirement). No credit card details are ever given to us, or kept by us

These details are only viewed by the course planner and presenter and are password protected.

For example, we collect information about special access or dietary needs.

For some training and registration you are asked to give information about your expertise:

          For accredited courses, such as Food Safety in Classrooms, it is an exam board requirement that we assess previous learning and take this into account when planning differentiated learning.

          For accredited courses, such as Culinary Arts, questions are asked to ensure that the applicant meets SFA funding requirements.

– For other courses, we may ask details about the exam board courses that you teach, and what you would like help with, these are to help us plan a suitable day, but are optional questions.

– When registering for the Resource Bank, we ask you details to be able to verify your identity and contribution to the Closed group, to gain access to the resources.

When you book with us, we always ask for your school contact details, the course presenter uses this to:


          Send you your ticket and invoice
          Send you important delegate joining instructions, maps, handouts and link to the digital course folder, plus post event evaluation.
          Get in touch with you if there is an important change to the course for any reason, for example the school is closed due to Snow

          Send you a 48-hour reminder ahead of the course, with your ticket needed for registration

 

We may also use these details to:

          Provide a guest list (with full name and school name, plus any access/dietary needs) for the venue, to allow entry to schools under safeguarding processes. We do not allow venues to have your email address or personal details.

FOOD TEACHER CENTRE is a UK based self-help group founded by Louise T Davies in 2013 and supported by experienced associates. It provides a platform to exchange best practice, give advice and support to less experienced teachers, answering practical concerns and keeping them abreast of the latest curriculum changes. A one-stop shop for like-minded professionals who seek help and information. It is free to take part and is facilitated through a closed on-line group, safeguarding the conversations of the teaching staff.

The idea of a ‘Teacher’s Centre’ is a response to the lack of local and national specialist support and diminishing Continuing Professional Development with the demise of local authority advisers ASTs, lead practitioners and supporting organisations.
